Starting January 2025, the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) will review various micro-credentials and older training schemes approved before the 2023 rule updates. This review will cover training schemes for domestic learners, except basic first aid-related ones, and schemes under 12 weeks for international learners, excluding those focused on English language tuition. Additionally, micro-credentials not listed under current regulations will also undergo review. Further reviews for excluded schemes will be scheduled at a later time.

Programmes Included in the Review

NZQA will focus on the following types of programmes:

  • Older Training Schemes for Domestic Learners: Excluding those related to basic first aid.
  • Short Training Schemes for International Learners: Courses lasting less than 12 weeks that are not related to English language tuition.
  • Micro-Credentials: Those not listed under the current rules.

Excluded programmes will be reviewed at a later date. If unsure about the approval status, providers can contact NZQA.

Why the Review is Necessary

This review ensures that training schemes and micro-credentials are updated to meet current NZQA rules. The need arises from the amendments to the Education and Training Act in 2022, which came into effect in January 2023.

Review Process for Providers

  • Training Schemes: Providers will receive an email from NZQA in early 2025 with a review form and instructions. Reviews will be due on the anniversary of the scheme’s original approval date.
    • Example: A programme approved in June 2013 will need to be reviewed by June 2025.
  • Micro-Credentials: Review dates remain unchanged as listed in the NZQA register. Providers must complete the same review form, indicating whether they intend to continue offering the programme or retire it.

Timeframes and Extensions

  • Providers offering programmes under old rules have three months from the review date to apply for any necessary changes.
  • Organisations delivering multiple schemes may request more time to complete the review process. Extensions are granted on a case-by-case basis.

Supporting Workshops and Resources

To assist providers, NZQA continues to offer workshops to ensure consistency in graduate outcomes. These sessions will run throughout the remainder of 2024, and registration details can be found on the NZQA website

Student Accommodation Monitoring Findings

NZQA also conducted a review of student accommodation between 2021 and 2023. The monitoring found no significant issues, and a report detailing these findings is now available. Providers can review the report online.

2025 Programme Submission Deadline

Providers planning to submit programmes for levels 1 to 6 for 2025 delivery should apply by 4 October 2024 to be ready for Semester One. Applications can be submitted through the NZQA secure portal.
