Chinese Education Minister Huai Jinpeng’s Visit to New Zealand

In February, Education New Zealand hosted the 9th Joint Working Group on Education and Training between New Zealand and China, conducted virtually. This milestone event marked a notable progression in the longstanding educational ties that have spanned almost two decades between the two countries. The Joint Working Group has consistently proven to be a valuable mechanism for fostering collaboration, particularly through initiatives such as the Tripartite Partnership. This collaborative effort involves various stakeholders, including governmental bodies, researchers, educators, and students, all of whom tap into New Zealand’s robust research capabilities.

During the event, co-chairs Iona Holsted and Grant McPherson played key roles. They signed a significant Strategic Cooperation Arrangement endorsed by NZQA and CSCSE, emphasizing a mutual commitment to information exchange and qualification recognition. Notably, a dedicated working group was formed to explore recognizing online qualifications. Despite mobility limitations, the meeting highlighted resilient educational ties. It also discussed enhancing vocational education collaboration linked to China’s National Implementation Plan. The event was praised for reinforcing the strategic education partnership between the nations, with ENZ Director Miranda Herbert noting goal alignment.

Chinese Education Minister Huai Jinpeng’s Visit to New Zealand

During this week, Huai Jinpeng, China’s Minister of Education, visited Wellington and Christchurch to reaffirm the importance of the educational alliance between the two nations.

The recent trip by Prime Minister Chris Hipkins to China highlighted the pivotal role played by the educational connection, which is constructed on elements like student exchanges, collaborative academic and research efforts, as well as discussions on high-level policies. The swift arrival of Minister Huai following Prime Minister’s Hipkins’ visit is a source of satisfaction. This visit provides another chance to strengthen connections and foster interpersonal links between the two countries.

A significant outcome of Minister Huai’s visit will be the convening of the 11th Joint Working Group on Education and Training. This gathering will witness the endorsement of an Education Cooperation Arrangement between Education New Zealand and the China Education Association for International Exchange. The purpose of this arrangement is to enhance educational exchange and cooperation between New Zealand and China’s education sectors.

A brief courtesy meeting is planned between Prime Minister Chris Hipkins and Minister Huai, a connection that was unfeasible during the former’s visit to China and his stop at Peking University. In addition to visiting various educational institutions, Minister Huai will also be partaking in the prestigious New Zealand International Education Conference Ki Tua, where China is honored as the featured country of the year.

Jan Tinetti conveyed her contentment that Minister Huai will have the opportunity, while attending the international education conference, to interact with a varied group of high-ranking government officials, sector delegates, scholars, and students. China holds the distinction of being the largest source country of international students for New Zealand, with nearly 12,000 Chinese students enrolled in education within the country. This visit presents a splendid opportunity to showcase the benefits of pursuing education in New Zealand.
